One of the most popular things to do in Arizona and on Mill Ave. before Harkins moved, was to go have lunch or dinner on Mill Ave., and then go see a new blockbuster movie. So now that Mill Ave. no longer has a Real Movie Theater, I don't think it has any day attractions for 20 and under aged people like Tempe Marketplace has with Dave & Busters, a Real Harkins Movie Theater(which moved to Tempe Marketplace from Mill Ave to make more money, can't blame them for that, and at least they kept their art theater on Mill Ave.), and As You Wish Pottery. That's 3 businesses more than I can count on Mill Ave. that attracts people aged 20 and under to do something, and from those places they go to eat at the surrounding restaurants and they shop at the surrounding retail shops. So when these ASU underclassmen turn 21, do you really think they're going to go to these grungy bars on Mill Ave. like the upperclassmen do now? The underclassmen will have no connection with Mill Ave., because they have been riding the Free Orbit to Tempe Marketplace every week the last couple of years, so they will more likely go to the bars at Tempe Marketplace like San Felipe and Cadillac Ranch, or Scottsdale. So then all Mill Ave. becomes to 20 and under aged people, is 2 unique clothing shops(American Apparel & Urban Outfitters), 1 Real Hair Salon(Mood Swings), 2 Casual Food Restaurants(Five Guys & Jimmy John's), and then that's it. So in short, Mill Ave. needs to have businesses to attract the 20,000-30,000 ASU underclassmen that live 2 miles from Mill Ave. If Mill Ave. doesn't start to get real businesses, not gimmicks, not events, but those day-in and day-out businesses that draw the young people, then you we will see bars and more restaurants go under on Mill Ave., because if your not growing your dying.

nobodyknows said:

This is a really good point. It's clear that Tempe Marketplace has drawn people away from Mill Avenue as Mill has experienced quite a downturn in recent years. I work on Mill on weekend nights and all I see nowadays is a slightly ghetto crowd all being hocked at by people on the street that work for ghetto bars all trying to capture a portion of the dwindling # of people heading to Mill. You hear the same rap music blasted out onto the street from each bar, see the drunks and the fights and the oppressive police presence. Gone is the heyday of Mill like what I remember back in the late 90's and early 2000's when Mill was vibrant, had great live music venues and a diverse crowd with even more diverse businesses. I miss Beeloe's, Balboa, Long Wong's, Bento's, Island's, Harkins, The Loft, etc.

nobodyknowstag:tellus.millavenue.com,2008-02-07:Event/10761352010-01-22T09:17:08-08:002010-01-22T09:17:08-08:00We Need Recycling on Mill [updated]
My friend was at Caffe Boa recently and noticed that they're saving their wine bottles for people to decorate to show how many bottles they go through and why having recycling on Mill is so important. I didn't even know that there was no way for the bars/restaurants to recycle and that seems pretty important. It'd also be nice to have some recycling bins next to the trash cans on the street for plastic bottles and paper.

Alix Monty said:

Thank you, dtcfeedback. I am working with a group of ASU students who would like to help the restuarants on Mill Avenue to start recycling and to get recognition for their efforts. We will be making a serious effort this semester (Spring 2010) to institute a recycling program that works for Mill Avenue. By collaborating with the business owners and the City of Tempe, we hope to create a robust system that will benefit everyone.

We are now in the research and planning phase. We will soon be contacting the DTC office, but I thought I would start the dialogue here. For people under the drinking age, to have some fun, they have to look some where other than Mill Ave. A nice environment like a movie theater would be nice for students to have after having a long day of classes to relax them and also to be walking distance from their dorms so they wont have to worry about catching the bus to go to those places that already have these qualities. Mill Ave needs to think of the simple things and business will be reward.

N3T0tag:tellus.millavenue.com,2008-02-07:Event/9734842009-12-22T21:37:11-08:002009-12-22T21:37:11-08:00Replace the Mad Cap with an AMC or Cinemark to get the Underclassmen of ASU to go back to Mill Ave.
an anonymous user suggested:
Mill Ave. is losing it's ASU ties to Tempe Marketplace. If Mill Ave. doesn't start to get real businesses, not gimmicks, not events, but those day-in and day-out businesses that draw the young people, then you we will see bars and more restaurants go under on Mill Ave., because if your not growing your dying.
anonymoustag:tellus.millavenue.com,2008-02-07:Event/9035642009-12-04T17:58:32-08:002009-12-04T17:58:32-08:00More bars and independent business, but with college students in mind. No high-end shopping!
an anonymous user suggested:
I think Mill Avenue district should stay true to its roots and make sure to cater to students. Fewer high end restaurants and bars, and more places for students to frequent. This will also bring back the "cool" vibe that Mill has lost. Cool music venues would help! Fewer corporate buildings.
anonymoustag:tellus.millavenue.com,2008-02-07:Event/8988912009-12-03T06:17:22-08:002009-12-03T06:17:22-08:00Annual Small Business Expo
an anonymous user suggested:
Start an annual Small Business Expo featuring providers of small business resources, products, featured retailers, etc. Emphasis on these areas.....> Accounts > Advertising > Answering services > Automotive > Banking > Business Compliance > Business Opportunity > Business Planning > Business Premises > Business Support > Company Formation > Finance > Franchising > Fulfilment > Government > Graphic Design > Health & Safety > Home-based > Human Resources > I.T. > Import / Export > Information > Insurance > Intellectual Property > Internet > Legal > Magazines > Office Supplies > Postal Services > Printing > Property > Publishing > Retail > Sales, Marketing, Branding & PR

How about a Hippie Fest at Tempe Beach Park with local bands that play 60's-70's music; contest for best outfit, etc. Put some flowers in your hair and come on down.
anonymous
